Beneath the Southern Lights
We were on station near the Balleny Islands when a phone call woke me at 3am to inform that an Aurora Australis display was developing. Beautiful patterns of green tinged light were waving across the night sky.
The Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, is caused by streams of charged particles in the solar wind interacting with the earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere.
